What is

Hydrostomate is a specialist rehydration drink for people who don’t have a colon.

When you don’t have a colon, you lose a lot of water in your poo, which means you also lose important salts such as sodium.

If your sodium levels get low, you feel thirsty and so you drink more water; but when you don’t have a colon, the more water you drink, the more sodium you lose in your poo!

Symptoms of low sodium levels include thirst, headaches, fatigue, muscular weakness, cramping, nausea, and irritability.

Hydrostomate has been specially formulated to make sure that you absorb the water and the salts it contains, so you can be properly hydrated and keep those important salts in your body.

Who is it for?

Hydrostomate is intended for people who do not have a colon.

Hydrostomate is based on a specialist rehydration drink called St. Mark’s Solution, which has been widely researched and is shown to be the best way to rehydrate when you live with a stoma.

The science bit

The reason you lose salts in your poo when you live with an ileostomy, is because one of the main jobs of your colon is to absorb salts and water. That means that if you don’t have a colon, you’ll be losing extra salt in your poo.

When you drink water, your body adds salts to it from your bloodstream due to a process called osmosis, where salt moves from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

By adding just the right amount of salt to water with glucose, the water and the salts are dragged across the bowel wall and into the
bloodstream. This keeps you better hydrated, maintains your salt levels and may reduce the amount of poo that is produced.

Most hydration products contain potassium which can build up in your bloodstream and cause problems for long term users. Hydrostomate doesn’t contain potassium, and so it is suitable for long term use in people without a colon.

How to use

Hydrostomate is a specialist rehydration drink for people who don’t have a colon.

How to use Hydrostomate:

Dissolve the contents of one Hydrostomate sachet in 500ml of drinking water. Stir well and wait for the solution to dissolve.

Use fresh drinking water.

For sparkling water, half fill the vessel before adding the sachet contents. Allow to settle before topping up. Product should dissolve by itself in a few seconds.

If refrigerated the solution may be stored for up to 24 hours, otherwise any solution remaining one hour after reconstitution should be discarded.

Hydrostomate should only be reconstituted with water and to the volume stated. A lesser or greater dilution may result in electrolyte imbalance.

ADULTS (including elderly) – One or two sachets per day for adults who do not have a colon.

CHILDREN – Only to be used in children and infants if advised by your doctor, dietitian, stoma nurse or pharmacist.
